Australian Sailing qualifications.   

If you hold an equivalent overseas Instructor or Coach accreditation, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning.

Depending on the accreditation and country of issue, you may need to:

  • Undergo a practical skills assessment, and/or

  • Complete an Instructor or Coach orientation. 

 

Recognised Overseas Accreditations

Accreditations from the following nations may qualify for direct RPL accreditation, requiring only an Instructor or Coach orientation:

  • United Kingdom – Royal Yachting Association (RYA) qualifications

  • Ireland – Irish Sailing Association qualifications 

 

For accreditations from the following nations, a practical assessment by an Australian Sailing Senior Instructor (for Instructors) or Senior Coach (for Coaches) is required:

  • France – Fédération Française de Voile

  • Canada – Canadian Yachting Association

  • United States of America – US Sailing

  • New Zealand – Yachting New Zealand 

 

Other overseas accreditations of a similar standard may be accepted at Australian Sailing’s discretion. 

If your overseas accreditation has expired under your issuing nation’s currency policy, you must complete a full Australian Sailing Instructor or Coach course.

NSW General boat license

You will need to transfer your powerboat license to a NSW General boat licence.

You will have to register for a Knowledge test ($42) and then pay the $77 fee to get your official licence.

 

Paid Working with Children Check

 

The Working with Children Check (WWCC) is a requirement for anyone who works or volunteers in child-related work in NSW. It involves a National Police Check (criminal history record check) and a review of reportable workplace misconduct.

 

You can apply online HERE once you are in Australia. You will get an appointment to visit a Service NSW Center where you will need to present four proof of identity documents, and pay the $105 fee.

 

First aid certificate (HLTAID003/HLTAID011 or above)

 

This is a comprehensive first aid qualification including CPR and management of various emergency situations. Most international first aid certificates are recognised. 

You will need a valid first aid certificate to finalise your Australian Sailing qualifications. 

 

There are a lot of course providers in Sydney. It usually costs between $90 and $120 depending on the provider and location.
